I just finished watching some old movies. I watch "Chinatown" the other day, and today I watched "Marathon Man". Good stuff.

Chinatown was amazing. I can't believe I've never seen it before! It was in a 5 or 10 dollar DVD bin at the BX so I picked it up. Wow. Jack Nicholson (sp) was amazing. Great story, wonderful directing, and top notch acting.

Marathon Man was *almost* as good. It had a nice mix of intrigue and action, and a pretty good story. The acting was really really swell.

I saw Wanted tonight. I thoroughly fucking enjoyed it. I didn't think it was going to be THAT good. I can't wait to buy it!! I want to read the graphic novel now as well.

On that note, I read Batman: Year One by Frank Millar and Mark Muzuchelli (sp). It's AMAZING. Seriously. And half of the shit in Batman Begins / Dark Knight came from this book. The artwork is insane and ahead of it's time, and the writing is pure awesome, as per Millar. It's a very very fast read. I'm not a batman fanboy..I've never read more than a couple of the single comics, but I recommend this to ANYONE that even remotely likes comics.

---EPIC POST ALERT---

Travelogue:
Day 1, 14 Aug.- My friend from Tokyo was in town. For privacy sake we will call her "Margot". Margot and I happened to have the same flight to Tokyo, which was nice. We got there and she departed. I left out of the same gate, bound for Sapporo. After getting to Sapporo I wondered around a for a little while and finally came to my hotel. I went out and had some ramen and explored the scene on foot. Sapporo is like Tokyo, but with less people. It seemed pretty nice. I wouldn't mind living there, if not for the frigid winter months.

15 Aug-
Got up around 6am to take the subway to Asabu station. Waited in a giant line for the shuttle buses out to the Festival. The buses left at around 10am and arrived around 1045. Stood in line with thousands of other people waiting for the gates to open. Finally start walking in and it starts raining. It never poured, but it just rained steadily the entire day. I didn't have any rain gear, and I was dragging a rather large/heavy suitcase. I also had on some brand new converse that are a little small around the toes, width wise. All of this added up to a miserable couple of hours. I drug my ass all the way to my tent site (at least a mile away from the entrance) through the mud/rocks. I get there and the workers are like "you have to exchange your ticket for a tent site ticket at the front". Great. So I go allll the way back, then allll the way back again. Finally I set my tent up, still raining mind you, and get inside. I was completely soaked to the bone, and the converse had made giant blisters on my pinky toes. The one on my left foot had burst on the second trek to the tent site, so my sock was all bloody. All the clothes and stuff in my suitcase were wet also. I changed into some dryer clothing, and the rain subsided a little bit. Time for some music!

Quruli: 1500-1550- opening act on the main stage. Great band! Margot had exposed me to them previously, but it was only a taste. Great live performance. The guitarist is off the chain.

After that I got some food and wondered around a bit. This place was HUGE. 1 main stage and SIX side stages! SIX! I heard over the loud speaker that there were 40,000 people there.

I watched the Pillows for a little bit, they were good.

Tokyo Jihen: 1900-1950- ZOMG. SO awesome seeing them in concert. They played a good set. Mostly stuff from Variety. They played OSCA and Killer Tune, so I freaked out. The guitar portion of the set was a HUGE let down though. He is so good on CD's and in other live DVD's..not sure what happened. The rest was good though. Shiina's voice was top notch.

After that I just wondered around in a stupor for a while. I wondered into the Cystal Palace stage, which was like a club basically. They had a band called Buffalo Daughter playing. I was VERY impressed. It's like..space out rock? They would just jam for like 15 minutes straight. 3 gals on vox/guitar, bass, drums, and a dude on turn tables. Fuckin awesome.

I passed by as Ken Yokoyama was playing. Not bad. Bed time.

16 Aug-
Big day! Shiina Ringo day!! I think I woke up around like 8am. Nothing was going on so I stood in line to buy merch and stuff. I watched GaGaGaSP, which was like a punk band. They were pretty good. I then went to my tent I think. I passed by Red Star Field as Double Famous were playing. It was like a "big band" sort of thing. They were covering Sympathy For The Devil at the time so I hung around.

Beat Crusaders: 1540-1630- These guys were good! The keyboardist didn't have much to do, so he danced around a lot. He was tall and lanky, so it was funny. The guitarist was AMAZING. He had an Angus Young style school boy outfit that was dark blue. He was seriously good.

Pupa: 1800-1850- I like Tomoyo Harada, so I made a special trip to see Pupa. They were very very good. It was a lot like the Gorillaz, minus the hip hop. Very experimental, but the band members had been around a while so it was like new-old. I really enjoyed it. There were a lot of hippie types in the crowed. :)

Shonen Knife: 1900-1950- I have known about these gals for a while now. They are like the Ramones. Kurt Kobain, and a lot of other people, were outspoken fans of them. They have been playing since like '92! You can't tell though, because the show was full of energy. They fuckin rocked, and everyone in there was jumping around like nuts. For the last song the Beat Crusaders awesome ass guitarist came out and rocked the house. It was epic, because the Beat Crusaders played on the main stage, but Shonen Knife was on one of the smaller venues. Super awesome show, so glad I got to see them.

SHIINA RINGO: 2020-2110- HOLY FUCK. The moment I have been waiting for for months. I got fairly close, but the field was PACKED. You could tell that a lot of people had come just for this. They set up the stage with a piano and orchestra box, then some fireworks started going off. After the fireworks, Saito Nekko and 2 other guys came out and took positions. Shiina came out and just owned the entire place. Her voice was immaculate, her piano was amazing...it was the best thing evar. Saito Nekko is so damn good on the violin, it was scary. All in all, a beautiful set and something I hope I will never forget. For the last song, Saito took up the piano and Shiina just sang. It was beautiful, and like every single girl in the crowed was crying afterward.

I was going to stick around for Zazen Boys, as I really like Number Girl, but this girl took me over to Ego-wrappin'. Wow. I am so glad I saw them. They were fucking AMAZING. Certainly the best set of the festival, sans Shiina Ringo. It was a 6 piece jazz band, and the lead singer was this chick. Jumping around like a maniac, really reminded me of Karen O of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. She has a very lovely voice as well.

After that I meandered around for a little while until The Back Horn...

The Back Horn: 0130-0230- I had just seen these guys in Okinawa a couple weeks before, and they rocked just as hard on a big stage. It was 0130 in the morning, so the crowed wasn't giant..but it was fucking rabid. I got up to the front into the mosh pit area and had a fucking blast. These guys are a must see live.

I then got something to eat and went to sleep around 0400.

17 Aug-
Woke up at 0500 to pack up the tent and shit, then wait in line for the shuttle buses. Got to Sapporo and my hotel around 1000. I realized I had left my credit card at the festival, and I got really pissed off. I got the front desk people to get the festival peeps on the horn. They said my card was indeed there, at the lost and found. I only had 700 yen on me, and no way to get out to the festival grounds. The desk people talked to a cabby and he said he would take me out there. 13,000 yen and 1.5 hours later I was back at the hotel. The cabby knocked 3,000 yen off for me, but it was still a hundred dollar taxi ride..fucking lame. So it was about noon when I finally was able to chill out. I ate something and asked to check in. Check in time was 1300. Wow. So I fell asleep for 30 minutes on the couches in the lobby. I stumbled up to the desk around 1245 and asked to check in. I finally got to my room and went to sleep around 1300. I woke up at 0200, watched TV for an hour, then went back to sleep until 0630. Yup..that's the most sleep I have EVER gotten in my entire life. It was insane. Over 16 hours. That's almost an entire day, gone! oh well.

18 Aug to 21 Aug-
Made my way to the airport. Flew to Tokyo, met up with Margot. We had a lot of fun just going around. We didn't hit any tourist sites, as I did that the last time I was in Tokyo. I got drunk one night and we walked around west Ikebukuro. I talked to a cultist for a little while. We also went chihuahua shopping. We went to the top of the Tokyo Dome hotel. There is a really nice bar/lounge thing up there and you only need to buy one drink and you can sit there and look out over Tokyo. It's a freakin amazing view. I recommend that to everyone. Margot had a Japanese/Italian friend and he told me all about the Gipsy problem in Italy. I had no idea.

That about sums it up. Now time for some pictures. All the pictures from the festival are on my phone, so I will post those when I get them off of the phone.

Got the some new chocolate face shoes at the BX before my trip. I got the Cons at Jusco here on Okinawa. I got the fucking SICK ASS Adidas at a shoe store in Ikebukuro. Chinese edition baby! They are like the olympic chinese versions or something..I don't know. Fucking hot though. I got the little Princess Mononoke things at the Moe store. It's like a Ghibli outlet. The stuff was actually very well prices, as opposed to most Ghibli merch I find. They glod in the dark, and go in a fish tank. I will post pics of them in my tank when I stop being lazy.

Here's some things about movies I have seen recently.

Machine Girl
Japanese movie about...umm..gratuitous violence basically. Most of my new icons are from that movie. Second most bloody movie I have ever seen, behind Dead Alive. It's completely ludicrous. Great time.

Snakes On A Plane
Finally watched it. Wow. Not sure what to say. I would recommend it, for the lolz, but I have a hard time. It's almost like it tried to hard to be lame. Evil Dead is lame, but that's what makes it great. They didn't TRY to be lame and B movie, they just worked with what they had. Snakes is trying to hard to be a B movie. It's still a good laugh.

Little Miss Sunshine
Good. Good characters. Lolzy parts. I guess it had a nice message, but I'm not very receptive to feel good messages.

Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
Sweet! Just like the other movies. Brenden Frasier was a little bit over-acting, but it was still good. Fantastic big time effects and really good pacing. Never really a dull moment once the gears start turning. Jet Li was good, and Michelle Yeoh was boss as always. And they had some FINE chinese girl as her daughter.

I played the demo for Too Human, a game I have been waiting for for a long time. Disappointing. Not the game I thought it would be. I would rather just play Diablo 2. I want to play it for the norse mythology, but fuck...

Got drunk with some friends and went to karaoke last night. I drank a lot more than usual, but I didn't get trashed. I paced myself pretty well. Karaoke was a blast. I got in some Sex Pistols, Lordi, Killers, Sweet, Shiina Ringo, etc. I love karaoke.

Full report on Jazz and Wine Fest @ Torii Beach - 2008

FUCKING LAME. Srsly. Last year they had about 15 tables, each with an assortment of wines. Many of the tables were themed - certain wineries, regions, etc. This year they had 3. 3 sodding tables. Last year they had at LEAST 90 different wines to sample. This year it was a mere 20. The lines at the 3 tasting tables were so long, I only tried 2 wines. Then me and B-sags just split a bottle and drank off that. The Jazz was good though, which was nice.

BUT there is a silver lining to this sad tirade. I met up with Kana, whom I haven't seen in like 5 months. She is same as always - awesome. We are going to start diving soon, yay.

Get this, my friend Bill that always makes fun of me for being a light weight passed the FUCK out in a lawn chair..and after a while started puking over the side of it. HAH! Man now I get to bust his balls to no end @ work.

And even better than all of that combined - I made friendsies with these 2 Japanese guys (Toshi and Yoshi lol) and their lady friend (Hiroko). We all had a lot in common, and they want to go out drinking/karaokeing with me! Yayyy. Hiroko was fucking plastered by the end of the night, and I was like holding her up so she wouldn't fall over. All my friends left from the Wine fest @ like 1145. I didn't get home until like 2am, I was just gabbin it up with my new friends. I had to take a cab home, which was like 25 bucks, but oh well.

I just picked up Shiina Ringo's new CD. I got the special edition or whatever. Came with some sort of contest entry and a sticker (!). Here are some pix.

I never buy CD's here, I always rent them. I can rent 15 cd's for the price of buying one..so it's pretty dumb to buy them. They always cost at least 3000 yen, which is like 30 bucks. BUT..come on?! I love Shiina Ringo so I had to. And it came with a sticker.

I am fucking starving, there barely any food in my house, and what little food there is looks unappetizing. WTF is wrong with me? I think it's lack of sleep. I stayed up all day being carted around looking at places to stay off base. I found a nice one with 2 tatami mat rooms..I think I'm going to take it. I have 2 more "look around" sessions tomorrow though, we'll see. It's going to be expensive as fuck to move off base. You have to pay like 2 months of rent (at least 2,500$), half of a months rent to the agency (700$), and some other BS deposits and crap. All in all, I'm going to be broke as shirt. fuck.

aquariums I really enjoy the fishkeeping hobby, and also large-scale aquariums. I like having pets, and I like having a little eco system in this tank. Different fish have different personalities, and I love how they bond to their owner. Maybe it's just because they want food, but I still love them for it. I like to just sit and watch them go about their business. Playing in the fast moving water, nibbling at the grass, exploring the caves, etc. Fun times.

discordianism I like "alternate religions" because I don't take religion in general very seriously. This is a good one, because I am a fairly chaotically minded person, and dischoridanism has a lot to do with chaos. It's hard to explain *what* it's all about, so just read the Wiki article. Anyways..I don't like actively follow it or anything, I just enjoy it's ludicrousity. I just made that word up.

myths Oooo myths are fun because they are explanations for things that we can't explain. Lightning? Oh, that's when Thor smacks a frost giant with Mjolnir. Myth's appeal to my inner bard, and I just really enjoy stories you know? That's what myths are, in the end. Bad ass stories, and cautionary tales. I am of course referring to myths in the context of the Old Times. Myth's these days are just lame, and probably just somebody trying to get your credit card number.

scuba If you've never been scuba diving in tropical waters, you haven't lived. It's hard to explain the splendor of the deep, but the times are few and far between when I experience on dry land what I feel below the waves. The best is night diving, when you can just turn your light off and float in the complete black. Weightless and sightless, just listening to the ocean. When you stir the water, tiny sparkles of photoluminescence light up the currents. It's absolutely engrossing. I wish I had gills.

taiko drum master Welllll I really enjoy rythm games, and drumming, so this takes the cake (sans Rock Band). It's not really that popular in the States, but you would be hard pressed to find an arcade without Taiko No Tatsujinn (Taiko Drum Master) here in Japan. It's not like the most popular game ever here, but a lot of people like it. Especially in Okinawa, where Taiko drums have a very special cultural significance.

tokyo incidents Probably my favorite Japanese band. They mix Shiina Ringo's (see below) awesome, dark, vocals with a lot of rock and jazz influence. The drumming is very jazzy, and the songs are fantastically varied. I have a tattoo on my left forearm of their symbol..that's how much I love this band. There is just something about them. They don't sound like the mindless droves of J-pop out there. The singles off their latest album:

椎名林檎 Shiina Ringo. The singer for Tokyo Jihen (Tokyo Incidents). She has had quite a solo career before forming Jihen. Her solo work is a bit darker and slightly..twisted? It's beautiful music though. Ringo's voice is very unique, and I think she is amazingly beautiful...Her KZK album is fantastic. The tattoo on my right upper chest is her name, and her symbol. I've been painting the walls over in the two bedrooms and living room for the past couple days. It's not to hard, but it's time consuming. And gey.

So I just dropped like 500 bucks to get the red car ready for sale. The day after that my silver car, which I was going to use while the red one was on the lemon lot, just randomly broke down while my wife was driving. It's not overheating, but after you drive around for like 15-20 minutes and it gets a chance to heat up it just dies if there isn't any gas applied. My redneck friend looked at it and thinks its the "coil". Fair enough.

So now I have to drop even more money on automobile bullshit. Plus the money I'm going to spend to buy all new furniture...

That is IF I get to move off base. I have to be out of the house in 30 days and my supervision STILL won't fucking tell me if I'm going to the dorms or if I can move off base. It's cool guys, I don't need to like...shop around for apartments/save money/KNOW WHERE THE FUCK I'M GOING TO LIVE.

We've been sleeping on an air mattress since Thursday. Comfy...

And to top off my fucking retarded stress levels, my "best friend" is being a complete asshole. I have no idea why. It's like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Goddamned Hyde. He is all cool and shit until we get to work, and a fucking switch flips in his head. "I'm going to chastise Sean today. I'm going to make him feel worthless and like a complete piece of garbage, merely for my own amusement. I'm going to insult everything he stands for and try to bring him to the lowest level possible." I don't usually give a shit about what people think about me, but if you are going to be my friend - be my friend. Otherwise, fuck off. Don't act like it *some of the time*. If he hates me, that's fine. But at least have the decency to put in on the table instead of begrudging me every time you feel like you need to one up someone.

On a lighter note, there is a Jazz and Wine festival at Torii Station on the 5th that I plan on going to. They have these things like 3-4 times a year. It's free to get in, and they have good local (okinawan) jazz musicians playing all day. You can pay 20-ish bucks for a ticket to sample the plethora of wine they offer. There is usually like..15 tables. Each one has like 4-5 different varieties of wine on it. They give you a little card with a list of all the wine at the tables and you can check them off and buy them later. It's super fucking cool, you get to taste an assload of good wine, AND get super fucking sloshed doing it. Last year I got WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEDDDDD.. I spent like an hour and a half in the wine tasting..just going from table to table. Hammered.
